Minnesota itinerary: Minneapolis


Minneapolis blends natural beauty and urban sophistication.

A chain of lakes, the Mississippi River and 200 miles of walking, biking and cross-country ski trails are located within the city limits. All of that nature is literally steps from a vibrant arts and music scene, the best shopping in the region and top museums.

The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum presents the University of Minnesota’s modern art collection. Minneapolis Institute of Art houses a large display of classical Chinese art and architecture.

Take a self-guided tour on the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail through the Minneapolis Riverfront District. For a longer walking or biking adventure, go through the seven districts of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway.

Minneapolis was built on flour, and the Mill City Museum provides a portal to the city’s storied past. The Flour Tower is an elevator ride that shows how milling makes wheat into flour and culminates in a rooftop deck with a panoramic view of the city’s Mississippi riverfront, including St. Anthony Falls.

Head to the Mall of America in Bloomington. The country’s largest shopping and entertainment complex is home to more than 520 stores, including unique shops, national flagship stores and emerging retail concepts. Other attractions include Nickelodeon Universe, a fully enclosed theme park; SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium; and Fly Over America.

Check out Guthrie Theater. The Jean Nouvel-designed riverfront home for the world-renowned theater company opened in 2006 and has earned numerous design awards including The Pritzker Architecture Prize. A 45-minute backstage tour and 75-minute architecture tour are available, as well as group discounts for shows.

Head to Foci – Minnesota Center for Glass Arts for a glass demonstration of various hot glass techniques. Narrated by a glass expert, the demonstration is an informative and entertaining look at what glass is, how it behaves at high temperatures and how people manipulate glass to create works of art.
