Hailing from the The Pike community of Whitehall in northern Muskegon County, Aaron knows how important great marketing is for lakeshore destinations big and small. He is a self-proclaimed “print evangelist” who believes there is no substitute for stories on physical pages when it comes to inspiring readers to explore and travel. However, he also recognizes that digital and social media play a vital role in reaching tech-oriented audiences. Aaron is no crusty codger. Aaron loves the opportunities all media platforms present but, as a former newspaper features writer and beat reporter, he has a special place in his heart for print. His biggest loves are his child, Jade; cruising the Lake Michigan coast with his lifetime travel companion, Lori; and meeting interesting new people. He’s always up for a game of chess and a good glass of scotch, too.

I have been involved in this wonderful Group Travel Industry for 13 years. I have been with Group Tour Media for 6.5 years. A former Director of Group Sales for two hotels in Gettysburg PA. This experience has helped me to forge many new relationships through Group Tour Media as I am able to use this knowledge in consulting with clients for their advertising needs, putting together advertising campaigns through print, digital and social media that help drive more Groups to their Destinations, Attractions, Dining and Lodging options.

Hello, I’m Greg Jones

Greg Jones, Media Consultant

I joined the Group Tour Media team in 2003, and have been in consultative sales since 1996.

As the sales representative for the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions I represent some of the most popular and diverse group travel destinations in the United States. Since every issue contains an editorial section for these states I also have a role in recommending suppliers and events that our editorial staff considers for coverage both in print and online.

I have a lot of family connection to the northeast; my parents originate from upstate New York and I was born in Oswego, near Syracuse. I have family currently living in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and northern New York. While living in the south has instilled a deep-rooted aversion to snow and cold weather, I have always loved the landscape (when not snow covered!) and people (covered in snow or not!) that you encounter when traveling this part of the country.

Growing up in Lexington and having attended the University of Kentucky, I consumed the blue Kool-Aid on being a UK basketball fan. I’m also an avid tennis player and a football fan (go Packers!). I’m the world’s worst at keeping up with today’s pop culture but I can talk music for days and quote just about every slapstick comedy ever made. I think the era of craft beer we are currently living through is probably the single greatest advancement in man-kinds history. I’m a slow reader but enjoy doing it – mainly non-fiction – which means I’m a self-admitted nerd. I sold high-end audio and video electronics for many years (no calls about why you’re Netflix isn’t working please!) before moving into the world of travel media.

I have two boys, William (born in 2008) and Richard (born in 2010), and when not talking to you about how Group Tour Media can help attract busloads of groups to your business I’m probably trying to keep them from burning the house down with whatever new “science” experiment their devious minds have concocted.

Survey Says!

give thanks

As many of you know, Group Tour Media partnered with Signet Research to run two reader recall surveys in 2018. To our knowledge, this is the first time any group travel publisher offered the ability to hear directly from their readers about the usefulness of advertising in their publication.

Well, the results are now in for both 2018 surveys and we’re very pleased with what we’ve heard!

Here’s some highlights:

– Roughly 25% of respondents said Group Tour Magazine was the only group trade publication they receive

– 75% said they read at least 3 out of the 4 issues sent, with the closest competitor at 40%

– 95% said they are involved in choosing one or more of the suppliers involved in future trips

– An average of 61% of respondents recalled seeing ads shown them from the issue, and 56% said they remember reading the ad in question, while 62% took some kind of action after seeing the ad

– Size was not the determining factor for success. Full page ads averaged higher recall for both seeing and taking action overall, but individual ads did not follow a linear improvement as size went up. Quality of message and frequency seem a much better determiner of success than simply size of ad

– An average of 10% of action takers said they called the advertiser or visited their website and 25% said they either recommended or bought from that advertiser!

Needless to say, we’re very pleased to be able to show proof that our audience is highly engaged with the advertisers in our magazines. Its a testament to all of the hard work our circulation department does to find and retain quality readers, the editorial staff’s dedication to bringing our readers interesting and relevant information that makes them continue to read every issue as it arrives, and our production department’s skill at producing a high quality, eye-pleasing magazine issue after issue.

Lastly, it shows that when you have excellent partners great things can happen, so since this is the season of giving thanks please let me say a huge THANK YOU!! to all our current advertisers that help make a great team better. Many of you aren’t just customers but also friends and I value our relationship greatly.

I hope everyone has a great holiday season and let’s work together to make 2019 awesome!

The Group Tour & Student Group Tour Markets are a great place to be involved for seasoned veteran sales managers as well as newbies just trying to figure this fun, long lasting, memorable market out. Writing this while traveling from NTA held in magnificent Milwaukee and now going to Lexington Ky for a day and then traveling back to Windsor Canada across from Detroit for OMCA!

I have a close, dear friend that started this in this niche market and were as green as the Kentucky Bluegrass all around Lexington! Now a days, that same person has been and is “Workin’ It”. They have built a list of extremely loyal tour planners through their advertising and connections through Group Tour Magazine & Student Group Tour Magazine from both the group tour and student group tour markets. They have stuck with it, made their clients feel special and along the way, took care of these tour planner’s guests/clients. First year in the business they got one Motorcoach trip and felt a great accomplishment. Today, they get that same tour planner that booked that first trip, but now they get upwards to 50 coaches a year from that one tour planners. The tour planner tells us; they “know their guests are always taken care of when we send a coach their way”. They feel the love when they arrive and so does each of the tour guests onboard.

I’d guess in closing, it’s not always the quantity of tour operators you book, but even better, it’s the QUALITY!

Make it a great day, great week and great rest of 2018!

A Feast of Thankfulness

A time of thanks

November is a great month! This month brings us crisp mornings, fall-scented candles and warm cider.

What’s unique to November is that it is a transitional month. November ushers in an opportunity to rest and reflect and carries us into one of the busiest times of our year—the holidays and end of year planning.

This November I am reflecting on what a good, wonderful, wild and crazy year it has been for me. I got married last November and moved from Pennsylvania to Billings, MT. After settling in, I came on board with Group Tour Media.

It has been a pleasure for me to get to know so many of you. Thank you for allowing me to serve you in this role. I look forward to getting to meet many of you face-to-face at American Bus Association’s Annual Marketplace in January.

As you plan for 2019, I am here to help you.

I thank you for your part in my journey,

Aimee Smith

A Time to be thankful

thankful

We are moving into what is my favorite time of the year. It is always a time of reflection upon our year and we look upon all that we can be thankful for as the days and months have rolled by so swiftly. For me it is time to look at what I have been so greatly blessed with recently.

So much to be thankful for with family and friends, but a focus lately has been during this time of having six added states to my territory in the past 3 months, I am so grateful to all of you and give thanks for your graciousness in our conversations and the process of getting to know so many of you a bit better. All of you have been so helpful during this transitional process in assisting me in learning more of all that your destinations have to offer our readers, and all of the experiences they can be planning for and adding to their Group itineraries moving into 2019/20.

I am looking forward to meeting so many of you in the upcoming months at Travel Shows and conferences throughout the south and creating new and lasting relationships.

May all of us have a great understanding during this season of all that we can look back on and say, “Yes, very thankful and blessed” for so much!

Have a wonderful time of year with family, friends and travel partners.

Happy Thanksgiving!!
